Where to eat and drink in Utila

Despite being a small island, Utila doesn’t lack of places to eat and go out. Whether you’re after a barbecued fish or a rave party in the most trippy setting… Utila has it all!

  • RJ's

Opened on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday’s this bbq place is an institution on the island. They’ve got plenty of choice, from barracuda to fresh caught tuna, sumptuous prawns or pork steak this place will rejoice any meat or fish lover out there. If you’re a big group, I’d recommend booking in advance as they get very busy!

  • Mama Rosa

This is the best place on the island to eat the Honduran delicacy, Baleadas. They look and taste a bit like big tortillas and come with a base of cheese and black bean paste. You can add any other topping you’d like from avocado to lobster!

  • Rethink

This organic sustainable cafe has a lovely little pontoon where you can sit by the water whilst eating a deliciously homemade smoothie bowl. All the ingredients are organic and freshly cooked.

  • Hotspot Cafe

Cute little cafe located not far from the port. They have lots of veggie and vegan options. Keep going past the cafe, towards the water and you’ll find some tables nested on a dock by the clear blue waters.

  • Mister Buddha

Despite eating a lot of fish, sushi doesn’t seem to be very popular in Honduras nor central America. This is why I didn’t expect much from Mister Buddha but it was possibly one of the best sushi restaurants i’ve ever eaten. The offering is varied and inventive! Try the lion fish rolls. They also sell some crafted Hondurian beers on tap.

  • Treetanic

This atypical venue which reminded me of a bit of Parc Guell was built by an American man whilst on acid. You can visit it by day, every day or by night when they organise a party on Fridays every fortnight.

By day, you’ll meet the man behind the architectural piece and it seems like he’s never come down from his trip to be honest. They charge you a small fee to get in as well. By night, you can dance the night away in the boat like dance flood and wander the tree houses along the way.

  • Tranquilo Bar

Don't miss Tequila Tuesday at Tranquilo's bar where you can enjoy (or regret) free shots of Tequila until 10pm.

  • La Cueva

This is the island after hours bar! When everywhere else is closed this is the place to be to keep the party going until dawn!

  • Bando Beach

Chilled beach bar, great spot to catch some sporting events or just hang out with an ice cold beer. They sell local craft hondurian beers here as well.
