Semuc Champey

Visit this lush tropical reserve and swim in some clear blue waters. This is one of Guatemala’s national treasures.

  • Stay...

If you’re looking for a party stay at the luscious Zephyr lodge.
They’ve got great jungle views and a big pool to chill in. It’s conveniently located near the bus stops in lanquin but you won’t be walking distance from Semuc.

If you want a chilled backpackers experience Green Go’s
They offer cute little tree house to stay in and they are very conveniently located 15min walk away from Semuc.

If you want a ‘hippy’ experience stay at Utopia
The hostel is set in a cacao plantation so if you’re staying there don’t miss the chocolate making workshop! You get to make and take all the delicious chocolate treats with you too. I did like the communal space there which has stunning views over the jungle. Only downside I would say is, the lack of internet, you’ll have to walk up a hill to a lightless internet spot. The so called ‘Nooks’ are also just by the dorms with no real separations so you’ll hear everything! Also you must be a morning person as they love to blast some music from 7am onwards.

  • Things to do...

    Semuc champey...
It’s pretty easy here, the main attraction is semuc champey a collection of crystal blue ponds with chilling areas and jumping ropes. I’d recommend spending the day there and don’t miss the walk up to the mirador where you’ll get the infamous picture of all the ponds.

    Tubing...
Back on the tube. Every hostel will organise a tube excursion. If you’re staying at Utopia, you tube all the way back home. They arrange to take our bags and we just made our way down empty handed. You won’t have to worry about being thirsty too as There’s also lots of locals selling beer there too. There’s a few rapids so make sure to hold on to your beers.

    The caves...
Go explore some caves with candle light. Just by the Semuc champey ponds you can take a stroll into Mayan’s history. Worth the detour!
